COMMITTEES
Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc.
B.W.L's Committees are responsible for the following activities:
Budget/Finance Committee
* Drafting the annual operating budget.
Christmas Party Committee
* Planning the annual Christmas Party at which new bar admittees and B.W.L. members who received promotions during the past year are publicly recognized.
Cocktail Sip Committee
* Planning the annual Thanksgiving Eve Cocktail Sip, a semi-formal party which serves as the primary fundraising event for B.W.L.
Conference of Delegates
* Evaluating and drafting proposed legislation and attending the statewide Conference of Delegates meeting held at the annual California State Bar Convention each fall.
Community Action Committee
* Organizing the Thanksgiving basket project in which food is given to more than 60 needy families each year.
* Gathering toiletries to provide to persons residing at the Jenessee Center, a shelter for battered women and their children.
* Gathering toys to give as Christmas presents to needy children at Drew Medical Center.
Education Committee
* Organizing panel discussions of attorneys at law schools throughout Los Angeles.
* Organizing a bar examination tutorial program attended by law students throughout Los Angeles.
Endorsements/Evaluations Committee
* Reviewing the applications of judicial candidates in order to evaluate their fitness to serve in the judiciary.
Hospitality Committee
* Providing cards and flowers to B.W.L. members and supporters on the events of births, promotions and other noteworthy occasions.
Internet Committee
* Implementing policies and procedures regarding the B.W.L. web site.
Legislation Committee
* Evaluating proposed legislation and analyzing its impact on the Black community.
Newsletter Committee
* Creating the newsletter which is regularly distributed to members and B.W.L. supporters.
Publicity Committee
* Publicizing B.W.L. events through the dissemination of fliers, press releases and other materials.
Scholarship Fundraising Committee
* Organizing the annual scholarship fundraising event, typically a luncheon or dinner attended by more than 300 guests including attorneys, law students, judges and members of the general public.
Scholarship Selection Committee
* Selecting recipients of law school scholarships and bar examination grants based on the applicants' academic record, community involvement and financial need.
